He was the first King of England raised as a Protestant. He never actually ruled England, as he was too young, and instead a Regency Council was in control. When he was discovered to be terminally ill at age 15, he and the council drew up the 'Devise for Succession' so that the Catholicism would not come to power. In this, he named his cousin Lady Jane Grey his successor, and excluded Mary and Elizabeth. However, after his death Mary claimed the throne within 13 days. |
