His family was very well connected, his cousin was the pope before him and because of this he was given the position of Cardinal. After his cousin's death, he became Pope. When Henry first came to power, they got along rather well and he even made Henry 'Protector of the Faith. After Henry tried to get an annulment, thus taking away from the pope's power, they were on bad terms. He did Henry another favor by appointing his friend, Thomas Cranmer as Archbishop of Canterbury, and in return wanted Cranmer sign allegiance to the papacy. Cranmer refused to do so and instead chose to grant the annulment for Henry. The Pope was furious and excommunicated both him and Henry VIII. |
